EXPERIENCED, FAIR & IMPARTIAL

Judge Dirk Sandefur is a sitting, 3-term State District Judge in one of Montana’s busiest and most populous districts, the Montana 8th Judicial District Court in Great Falls and Cascade County. District Court is the highest state trial court in Montana.

[JudgeSandefur] Judge Sandefur was first elected in 2002 in a highly competitive race. The citizens of Great Falls and Cascade County have since twice re-elected him in unopposed elections in 2008 (85% of the vote) and 2014 (88% of the vote). Now in his 14th year as a state district judge, he continues to have the duty and honor of presiding over the most important legal affairs of the State of Montana and its citizens. He has a proven record and well-known reputation as a fair, impartial, and hard-working district judge.

Judge Sandefur is 55 years old, has been married for 28 years, and has three children, one in college at Montana State University in Bozeman, one child and an informally adopted niece in college at the University of Montana in Missoula, and one child in high school at C.M. Russell High School in Great Falls. His wife, Paula, has been employed full-time in the banking industry in Great Falls for the last 21 years.

Judge Sandefur is proud to be an unprivileged product and representative of Montana’s working people. A third-generation Montanan born and raised in Great Falls, he came from working people of little means (both from Malta — his father was an enlisted Korean War veteran and auto body mechanic and his mother was a medical lab technician) who struggled and could hardly make ends meet for their family, much less afford to send their children to college and then law school. He graduated from the University of Montana with honors in 1985 and from the UM School of Law with high honors, ranked 3rd in his class, in 1993. With little family assistance, Dirk and Paula financed his education with part-time low-paying work and school loans which they then worked hard to repay. Like many Montanans, he has struggled to overcome these disadvantages through hard work and perseverance.

In addition to work experience in various low-paying blue collar jobs and 1 year in the private practice of law, Judge Sandefur has extraordinary experience as a public servant in Montana. He served as a police officer for the City of Havre for 3 years, as a contract public defender, 8 years as a Deputy Cascade County Attorney, and now as a State District Judge. This broad-based work and community experience and perspective has been invaluable to his public service as a district judge and would be a similarly unique and invaluable asset to the public on the Montana Supreme Court.

Judge Sandefur’s political and judicial philosophy is simple and straightforward – he fiercely believes in the rule of law, the bedrock principles and individual rights embodied in the U.S. and Montana Constitutions, and a fundamentally fair, impartial, and even playing field for all.
