Lawrence VanDyke IV became a lawyer in 2005.  He worked for the giant law firm Gibson Dunn in their Washington DC and then Texas offices until 2012.  Gibson Dunn represents corporations in legal matters and lobbys for corporations in it's Washington DC office.  Gibson Dunn is well known in Montana -  it's litigation tactics were described as “legal thuggery” by the Montana Supreme Court after a Great Falls, Montana jury found that the firm had maliciously sued a Great Falls small businessman. (Source: Seltzer v Gibson Dunn, 2007 MT 62, ¶180 "In short, GDC’s use of the judicial system amounts to legal thuggery. This behavior is truly repugnant to Montana’s foundational notions of justice and is therefore highly reprehensible.")

VanDyke moved to Montana from Texas, and he did not become licensed to actively practice law in Montana's courts until 2013.  After working in Montana state government for a little over a year, VanDyke quit to run for a seat on Montana's Supreme Court.

VD's Experience?
We'd like to link you to some of the work VD has done, but frankly there really isn't much.  Most of his career VD has been the second or third chair attorney or 11th attorney, with another more experienced attorney actually in charge. He claims in a campaign video to have "spent his career arguing in front of supreme courts" [his video says courts plural] BUT we can only find one Montana Supreme Court [sorry, search wouldn't save, you have to type VanDyke in the Case Attorney box] case he's appeared in, and only one case he might have actually argued before the Montana Supreme Court.  VD is listed in five cases before the Texas Supreme Court [you may have to type VanDyke in the Attorney box] - he wasn't lead attorney or argue in any of them.  If anybody can provide links to VD's "experience" please do - email
us: montanalibertyandjustice@gmail.com

In one case before the Texas Supreme Court VD did file a motion to have another attorney admitted pro hac vice, making VD one of 11 lawyers on the case.  The case - well just a guess but seems VD carried the books for the 10 other corporate lawyers that were representing a corporation against a widow in an asbestos case.
